The hellbound heart a novel5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() All were blinked, focused on their own wants and desires in the hope it would coincide with the object of their affection. This time it left me with the thought, which is a quote by several others including Emily Dickinson ‘ The Heart wants what it wants – or else it does not care’. That seeing that – Clive Barker is such a visual writer – I couldn’t be Lifestyle, the desperate yearning each is afflicted with is exposed. Surprisingly it has always been pity and not anger or shock or horrorįor these characters because beneath the veneer of everyman and the humdrum ![]() I still care, I am swept up each time rooting for the good guys and pitying theīad guys. I know the answers to these dilemmas and more, but ![]() In her scheme, Kirsty face her fears, Rory continue to feign obliviousness and Still draws me in so I am on tenterhooks throughout: will Julia be successful The last twenty years give or take, and every time, even knowing the plot it I have read this short novella untold times over ![]() So rather than rehash what has already been said so well including the plot, I’ll just add my thoughts on this reread. This is a classic tale that has had many, many reviews extolling and rightfully so, just how brilliant it is. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() What really surprised me was how quickly I was sucked in by the story, and how surprised I was to reach the end of the book - it really just flew by. This is the sort of vampire story that's likely to appeal to fans of more than just BL - while the romance is certainly there, there's nothing here to earn the 18+ rating, at least in this volume. Going into this I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I got was an unexpectedly compelling story that was fast moving and plot-dense, full of action and violence and suspense. ![]() The panel where Lou discovers Sein being crucified is amazing, showing the artistic sensibility of a woman at the top of her craft. This isn't your average pretty book, but the art is absolutely stunning. She has an excellent sense of the dramatic, and manages deeply emotional faces and dynamic action sequences with equal skill. ![]() The CG color art on the cover doesn't really show off Kusumoto's art to its best advantage - the incredible detail and dense shading really looks best in black and white. The art here is quite unusual, dark and heavy, which fits the gothic tone of the book nicely. ![]()

Iron Council by China Miéville5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Iron Council follows three major narrative threads that join to form the novel's climax. Clarke and Locus Awards in 2005, and was also nominated for the Hugo and World Fantasy Awards the same year. Iron Council is one of China Miéville's most overtly political novels, being strongly inspired by the anti-globalization movement, and tackling issues such as imperialism, corporatism, terrorism, racial hatred, homosexuality, culture shock, labour rights and war. The cogheart adventures5/10/2023 ![]() Robert and Malkin are indeed an unlikely duo, but it is apparent that they must work together to get to Lily, because they are definitely being pursued. With a watchful eye, Robert realized the fox was a mechanimal and impulsively sought him out to see if he could be of assistance. ![]() ![]() The teen-aged boy living above Townsend’s Horologist’s was having trouble sleeping and he spied the fox from his window. Slinking and thinking, Malkin has no idea he has been spotted. He must get a message to John’s daughter, Lily, but even a creature as clever as he cannot make that journey alone. Professor John’s airship was attacked and it seems the sole survivor is Malkin, the mechanimal fox that serves as family pet and pseudo-protector. It has to be hard for a young reader to step away from this fast-paced, perilous plot because as an adult, I found myself hurrying through a chore or four so that I could get back to the search for the oh-so-secret cogheart. Set in the skies above and the streets running through London, this scintillating story of clockworks, mechanimals, hybrids and humans is the book that will keep kids reading well past bed-times. ![]()

![]() ![]() As far as I can tell, Sanderson, who has been topping bestseller lists for the better part of the 21st century, has not been written about in any depth by any major publication ever. On the other, the ignorance goes far beyond WIRED. ![]() Sanderson has millions upon millions of fans all over the planet it doesn’t matter that some losers at a single magazine (even if it is one of the nerdier ones) had never heard of him. Nobody had the first clue who or what I was talking about. How’d he do it? Why now? Is Brandon Sanderson even a good writer? On the day of his record-breaking Kickstarter campaign-$42 million of that $55 million-I came to the WIRED offices ready to gossip. By Sanderson’s estimation, he’s the highest-selling author of epic fantasy in the world. For a writer of young-adult-ish, never-ending, speed-written fantasy books, it’s huge. ![]() This is obviously a lot of money for anyone. Most years, Brandon Sanderson makes about $10 million. ![]()

All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() That quasi- telepathic pact between author and reader held little interest for a general audience.
